PersonalWeb Privacy Policy
Claria Corporation's PersonalWeb creates a customized home page designed to replace your current Internet Explorer and Firefox home pages.
PersonalWeb creates your customized home page without needing to know who you are, so PersonalWeb doesn't collect and use any information to identify you. The PersonalWeb software sends us anonymous information from your various Web browsers about how you use and search the Web and also identifies some of your computer settings and software applications. If you use the Internet Explorer and Firefox Web browsers, PersonalWeb will send us data from both Web browsers, not merely the Web browser you were using when you installed PersonalWeb.
We use the information PersonalWeb sends us to customize the content and ads you see on your PersonalWeb Home Page and at some of the websites you view across the web. We also use the information PersonalWeb sends us to improve the products we offer and develop new products, and for aggregate research and reporting.
PersonalWeb may provide links and content from Web sites owned by third parties (companies other than you or Claria) over whom Claria has no control. Your interactions with those Web sites and the information you provide them is governed by their privacy policies, not this Privacy Policy.
You have choices about how PersonalWeb works: You can pause personalization, choose whether to set PersonalWeb as your home page, and change the way PersonalWeb displays information on your home page. You can also easily uninstall PersonalWeb at any time.
What Information Does PersonalWeb Collect?
When you first install the PersonalWeb software, it will create a customized home page for you based on your Web browsing history. While your computer is on, PersonalWeb will periodically send us:
- Anonymous information about how you use the Web; for example —
- the URL addresses of Web pages you view and how long you view them,
- the links and advertisements you click on,
- whether you make a purchase, and
- non-personally identifiable information you provide on Web pages and forms, including the Internet searches you conduct.
- Which computer operating system and Web browser(s) you use and identification of some of your system settings and software applications.
- Information on how you use PersonalWeb; for example, how often you use it and its settings and preferences.
The information we collect is stored and processed on Claria Corporation servers in the United States .
How Do We Use This Information?
We use the information we have to assemble a personalized selection of news, articles, links and other content and ads (including graphic ads, sponsored links and other offers) to display to you on your PersonalWeb Home Page. We also use this information to show you more relevant ads at some of the websites you visit.
We use the anonymous information we have to conduct research for use in improving our products and developing new products, and we aggregate the information PersonalWeb sends us to compile analytics and create custom marketing research programs.
If you contact us—for example, when you fill out a help or feedback form or call technical support—we use your contact information only to respond to your request.
Your IP Address
To view a Web page, your browser sends a request to the computer that stores the Web page and your browser includes the electronic return address where the Web page content should be sent. This electronic return address is called your IP address. Likewise, each time your browser or PersonalWeb communicates with us, it sends us your IP address. We may periodically use your IP address to make some demographic and geo-targeting inferences (such as your city, time zone, and designated market area) to better personalize your PersonalWeb Home Page. We may also provide your IP address to our partners who provide us with the content, advertising, or search results that we display on your PersonalWeb Home Page. We do not, however, log your IP address or use it to identify you.
With Whom Do We Share Information?
Search Partners: We may transmit search queries to companies who may provide us with search results, sponsored links and customized ads.
Content Partners: Some of the content that appears on your PersonalWeb Home Page may be provided by our content partners. We send these partners only a request for information that allows them to send the relevant content for us to display. We may also share with these partners aggregated, anonymous information about the use of the content they provide and about PersonalWeb usage in general.
Research and Reporting: The analytics and custom marketing research programs we compile from our aggregated, anonymous information may be announced to the press or public to report emerging Web usage trends, or provided to our corporate clients and partners so they can better understand the effectiveness of PersonalWeb, the results of their advertising campaigns, and trends in online consumer behavior.
Service Providers: We may share information with third parties who help us perform a business function that we would otherwise perform ourselves. They are prohibited from using the data to any greater extent than we do, and their use is limited by our internal policies and/or confidentiality agreements.
We may share information to protect our rights or if under a legal obligation.
Product Research
As part of our ongoing efforts to improve PersonalWeb, you may be invited to participate in anonymous research—for example, a survey or panel. Claria, and any research vendors that may assist us, will use the information you provide solely for the purpose of conducting the research for which you volunteer.
Cookies and Web Beacons
PersonalWeb will write cookies in the personalweb.com and jellycloud.com domains to your computer. We may use these cookies to 1) tailor the content and ads you receive from us, 2) keep track of your PersonalWeb settings and preferences, and 3) identify and manage the version of PersonalWeb on your computer.
We and our advertisers and content partners may include "Web beacons" in some of the ads and content on your PersonalWeb Home Page(s), and some of our advertisers may include Web beacons on some of their Web pages at our request. These Web beacons help us access the cookies we set on your computer, and our advertisers and content partners access their cookies, allowing campaign analysis and usage auditing for our advertisers and content partners.
While you download and install the PersonalWeb software, we may use Web beacons to monitor your progress through the installation process. We use these Web beacons to identify and correct problems with the installer program and to improve the installation process.
You can control cookies using your Web browser(s) settings. If you use more than one Web browser, you will need to separately configure how each Web browser manages cookies. Refer to your browsers' Help menu for more information.
Security
We are committed to protecting data we collect, and we use a variety of security technologies and procedures intended to help protect the data from unauthorized access, use or disclosure.
User Controls
You have choices about how PersonalWeb works. When you install PersonalWeb, Personalization is on. You can pause and resume personalization quickly and easily through PersonalWeb Preferences. When Personalization is paused, PersonalWeb will stop collecting information about your Web-browsing activities. However, PersonalWeb may:
- Send us information that it collected before you paused,
- Continue to collect and send us some information about how you use your PersonalWeb Home Page, including which ads on your PersonalWeb Home Page you click, and;
- Continue to identify and inform us which computer operating system and Web browser(s) you use, and some of your system settings and software applications.
We will use this information, for example, for product support and advertising campaign reporting. We may also continue to use your IP address to make some demographic and geo-targeting inferences (such as your city, time zone, and designated market area).
While Personalization is PAUSED, the content on your PersonalWeb Home Page will not be updated but the ads may change based on information collected before you paused. Also, PersonalWeb will display a reminder on your PersonalWeb Home Page that Personalization is paused, with a link to allow you to resume Personalization with one click. When you resume Personalization, PersonalWeb will once again customize your PersonalWeb Home Page. Some content may be added to your PersonalWeb Home Page right after you resume Personalization based on Web browsing that occurred before Personalization was paused.
How Do I Uninstall PersonalWeb?
You can uninstall the PersonalWeb software using the Microsoft Windows Add/Remove Programs facility or with PersonalWeb's uninstallation program, located in the PersonalWeb folder on the Windows Start menu. After you uninstall the PersonalWeb software, you will no longer have a PersonalWeb Home Page, and no additional data will be collected and stored in the cookies used by Claria to show you more relevant ads across sites you visit across the web. If you have any trouble removing the software, or if you have other questions about PersonalWeb, email support@personalweb.com, or call us at 650-980-1950 or 877-329-4246 (toll free in the U.S.).
Special Provisions for the Toolbar and PersonalWeb Mobile
If you have also installed the PersonalWeb Toolbar (“Toolbar”) or the PersonalWeb Mobile (“Mobile”), we will use the information collected by PersonalWeb to personalize the content and advertising displayed in those applications. We may also collect information about your use of the Toolbar and/or Mobile to personalize the content or advertising we display, or to improve our products, develop new products or for research or reporting that we may share with partners or the public. When setting up Mobile you may be asked to provide certain information including a user name, password, and information about your mobile device. This information is used solely to provide the Mobile service.
If you pause PersonalWeb personalization, the Toolbar and Mobile will not be updated while the pause is in effect. You may uninstall either the Toolbar or Mobile at any time using the Microsoft Windows Add/Remove Programs facility, but please note that those applications require that PersonalWeb be installed to function properly.
Sale, Merger, or Asset Transfer
If Claria Corporation or any of its assets is purchased or merged with another company, information we have collected from you may be one of the transferred assets.
Changes to This Policy
This Privacy Policy may be changed from time to time. If we make a significant change to this policy and apply it to pre-existing users, we will provide an appropriate online notice.
We will post a link to the current version of the Privacy Policy on your PersonalWeb Home Page(s) and at personalweb.com; prior versions will remain available for your review.
